Identity Map Relief

In progress picture Final piece "Confined but Not Limited" paper, foam, glue, pins 9. 5" by 23" Artist Statement -  For this piece I wanted to capture the feeling of an art gallery back home that I volunteer at. This space is very intimate and personal. Each work of art is positioned very close to one another throughout the gallery. When standing in one corner of the gallery, one is able to clearly see the entire rest of the space with ease. This is a cozy place that contains many mutually toned colors with the occasional pop of color provided by a piece of work.  I chose to make this particular space out of paper for the intentions of creating a structured, non-organic flow of the place. Since the space I am demonstrating is an art gallery, there are many similarly shaped structures and layout of the building. I origami folded 16 boxes all mutually colored to give this space a calming flow. The boxes represent the wall spa...

Fluxus Box

In process picture Final Piece  "The Hurt Locker" Clay, acrylic paint, wood, dirt, wire, leather, paper, cloth, glue 4" by 12" Artist Statement - The Hurt Locker I wanted to convey the horrifying reality that this specific movie pertains. The outside of the box is a clean, plain wooden box with a blue piece of fabric covering the top. The fabric has a bloody hand on it. This aspect of war is simple and straight forward. I used this aspect to convey some of the meaning delivered all throughout the movie. Death. Many soldiers die in war and are displayed in a box covered in an American flag for citizens to admire their heroic efforts. The inside of the box is split down the center with objects on the left and a landscape on the other side. The concept expressed is that while any one object may fall into a separate category, the objects are still a part of the collective whole, the soldier. The landscape demonstrated inside...

Memento

In process photo Final piece "Stray Guatamala" Fur, clay, sand 2" by 3" Artist Statement -  When I traveled to Guatemala, I took in so many beautiful sites. Traveling out of the country was an amazing, yet shocking experience for me. What stuck the most when I got back to the states were the stray dogs and black sand beaches. Early in the morning as the sun rose, I would walk the beach. The fog would be really thick, making it hard to see very far ahead of you. As I would walk, I would see many stray dogs roaming around the beach. Seeing all of the stray dogs on the beach was weird for me because there is nothing like that in the states. This piece is inspired by my trip to Guatemala. I used translucent baking clay, black sand, and fake fur to capture my memory into a palm sized memento. The translucent baking clay it used to capture the early morning fog. I then mixed the black sand and fake fur into the clay and molded it into a han...

On Longing Assignment

Halie McConnell "The body is the primary mode of perceiving scale" Nutrition and fitness is important to me. The harder I work and more effort I put into my workouts, I love to see how my body changes and evolves into a better me.  Halie McConnell "The souvenir exists as a sample of the now distant experience, an experience which the object can only evoke and resinate" This is a photograph of my uncle, aunt, cousins, and I. It is one of those pictures the workers take of you when entering the park. I love to look back at this "souvenir" to remind me of the great memories I made that night.  Halie McConnell "The souvenir reduces the public, monumental, and 3-D into the miniature, that which can be enveloped by the body" Surfing is a great pleasure of mine. My friend Jordan and I go surfing between classes if the waves are good. This is a special memory for me because it's just her and I and the se...
